You can now find me over on the handle @freddy.us on Bluesky! I had been meaning to create a Bluesky account for a while, but I wanted to self-host a Bluesky PDS (Personal Data Server) as well as register my domain name (freddy.us) as my handle. Those (self-imposed) requirements prevented me from joining until now.
I’ve finally(!) got around actually setting all of that up, so now I just have to use the platform (although I’m not sure yet that I’ll end up doing that).
Send me a follow over on @freddy.us, and I’ll probably give you a follow back!
A bit of Q/A
- Q: Why not use Mastodon instead of Bluesky?
- A: I actually already have a Mastodon account! I have not been using it super frequently since I believe there are better things in my life to focus on. That being said, I worry about the potential “social network” (in the human sense) that I am missing out on by only being on Bluesky – especially networking with academics.
- Q: Are you going to stop posting on Mastodon?
- A: I’m not planning on leaving Mastodon anytime soon! In an ideal world, I will set up a way of cross-posting/syndicating content across social platforms. Interacting with people who are not directly interacting with my posts on
<platform>
, or on here, is a different question, but currently I’m not using any social media frequently (and I hope I don’t get consumed again).

- Q: Don’t you think the AT Protocol is bad/evil? ActivityPub is the best!
- A: I think both protocols are bad in their own way, but the AT Protocol fixes some of the biggest issues with ActivityPub that I believe make mass-adoption difficult/impossible. What the AT Protocol lacks in terms of being “federated”, it definitely makes up for in owning your own data, which I believe is incredibly important – especially when ActivityPub instances disappear/go bad all the time. Maybe even the instance that I run will disappear someday, and it’s hard to recommend to my friends to join Mastodon if their content can just *poof*, disappear.
