In my recent “A New Era for My Blog” post, I made the claim that I have “several posts sitting in a ‘drafts’ state.” To expand upon that a little more, and to create my first “micro-post”, here is a list of the posts that I have in a “mostly finished” draft state:
- “Open-Source Does Not Mean You’re Safe” from January 2024
- This talks about how many people trick themselves into thinking that because they are using open-source software, they are safe.
- The post discusses “safety” looking at VS Code, maintainer burnout, XcodeGhost, and building code from source.
- This post was written before the XZ Utils incident
- “Your Startup Does Not Want AI” from April 2024
- This post draws upon my experience at Hinalea Imaging and speaks largely about the costs associated with developing and operating ML/AI systems, and how it is unsustainable for nearly every business.
- “I want to pay you a subscription fee (for what you’re doing right now)” from May 2024
- Where I discuss the merits and nuances of “free as in freedom” versus “free as in beer” in the FOSS community, and why I’d prefer it if people charged (cheap) subscription fees for their products.
There are some posts on topics that I have rough drafts of, and I’m hoping to write more on soon:
- (On the Ease Of) Maintenance of Dead Software/Syncthing
- Algorithmic Social Media Theory
- “Reflecting on ‘Everyone Should Learn to Program’”
- “Reflections on ‘Reflection on Trusting Trust’”
We’ll see when I get around to finishing these up and/or writing new ones. Even though some of the drafts are nearly complete, it’s possible, and perhaps likely, that I’ll write other ones first.
I’m also hoping to implement a public “drafts” folder to hopefully save some of these articles from the eternal dark, but I haven’t figured out how I want that to integrate into my website yet.
